Adventurous Iceland Elopement at Thingvellir National Park
We met these amazing Aussies halfway around the world for their Iceland elopement at Thingvellir National Park, and I’ll tell you what—it was soooo worth the below freezing temps. Somehow Abbey survived half the day with no coat… how? I guess the newlywed spark kept ‘em plenty warm & cozy 😉

A last-minute change in plans
Would you be shocked if I told you that we weren’t actually supposed to shoot Abbey and Evert’s Iceland elopement?! 😯 At the time, we were simply enjoying a vacation in Iceland with our brother and sister-in-law (who also happen to be a killer photo/video duo), who were supposed to capture Abbey and Evert’s day. . . only to get food poisoning the night before the elopement. So after a little back and forth with the couple, who came all the way from Australia, we got our shit together and covered for them the next day! They were a little hesitant at first (who wouldn’t be, getting a brand new photography & videography team less than 24 hours before you get married?!), but we all ended up adoring each other once we met up 😉
An unforgettable Iceland elopement experience
Traveling from Australia for their elopement, Abbey and Evert were dreaming of a ceremony surrounded by either greenery, mountains, waterfalls, or lakes. . . fortunately we were able to cover most of those during our adventure around Iceland. Their love for the sky inspired them to choose an elopement location with beautiful sunsets and gorgeous colors; somewhere they could look up at the moon, the stars, and maybe even the Northern Lights once the sun had set. Iceland ended up being the ULTIMATE place for their late fall celebration, with picturesque landscapes galore and an abundance of peace, quiet, and those dreamy nighttime skies they were craving. We were so thrilled by how perfectly it all worked out for them!!
We met up with Abbey and Evert at Austurey Cottages, the adorable cabins where they stayed, overlooking Lake Apavatn. These cottages are an amazing option if you’re looking for a place to stay during your own Iceland elopement, with incredible views, nearby fishing opportunities, an outdoor BBQ, and even a few local sheep in the area. Plus, it’s only a 20 minute drive from Thingvellir National Park, which was ideal for Abbey and Evert’s day. There’s even a gorgeous lakefront villa if you’d like to book a larger accommodation for you + your guests to stay at together!
The stars were only just beginning to disappear when we arrived at the cabins, and let me tell you one thing about this day: it was cold AF the whole way through. Especially for their early morning sunrise ceremony! Luckily Abbey and Evert were totally prepared with stylish layers to wear on top of their elopement attire, electric hand warmers, and lots of extra coats and blankets to warm up between events. The sunrise colors may look warm and welcoming in these photos, but trust me, the temps were anything BUT warm 😅
An epic adventure around Thingvellir National Park
Abbey and Evert wanted an epic elopement location where they could explore diverse terrain, see spectacular views, and mayyyybe even spot a direwolf or a White Walker. . . more on that in the next section though 😉 Thingvellir (Þingvellir) National Park was the total package for their big day, fitting everything they were looking for and more: rich history, rocky cliffs, towering waterfalls, deep valleys, and all kinds of plant life. These two officially became husband and wife in the Almannagjá gorge as they shared their vows at blue hour, the sun rising up ever so gently right afterward and giving the rocky terrain the most STUNNING, golden glow. Again—I’m not quite sure how Abbey managed to go so long without a coat, but getting to show off her breathtaking dress seemed to have been totally worth it!
Game of Thrones-inspired portraits at Thorufoss
After warming up with a quick hot drink + indoor rest, we made our way to Thorufoss (Þórufoss) to explore an iconic Game of Thrones set location—because when in Iceland, right? This insane waterfall provided the perfect backdrop for a few final portraits of Abbey and Evert before we went our separate ways. Pure freaking magic.
